Skin Care DIY: Oatmeal Cleanser

Greetings from the Dark Side ♥

Oatmeal not only makes a hearty breakfast, but it also makes the an amazing DIY acne-fighting cleanser! I was previously using the Honey and Cinnamon mask to help with my acne, but I wanted to try something new. I was on the MakeupAlley product review section and I saw the reviews for oatmeal as a beauty product. There are so many positive reviews, especially from people who have acne. It seems that oatmeal is amazing to help acne because it is anti-inflammatory and it  helps to smooth and exfoliate the skin. It will also help to gently unclog pores while still being moisturizing on the skin.

How To Make and Use the Oatmeal Cleanser

1. The only thing you need for an oatmeal cleanser or mask is, quite obviously, oatmeal! You can buy any type of oatmeal: whole, instant oatmeal in individual packages, Quaker Oats...whatever floats your boat. I personally wanted to make sure that I was only putting oatmeal (and no other chemicals) on my face so I opted for organic oatmeal from a whole foods market.

2. You have four choices after you buy your oatmeal:
-Use the oatmeal raw and whole to scrub your face
-Use the oatmeal raw and blend it a little to get a smaller pieces of oatmeal
-Use the oatmeal raw and blend it a lot to get a fine oatmeal powder
-Cook the oatmeal, let it cool, and then apply it to the face.

I personally do the third choice: blending the raw oatmeal into a powder. It is so much easier to use this way and it won't clog your drains. I keep the powder in a glass jar in my bathroom so I can use it everyday.

3. Take a small handful of the oatmeal into the palm of your hand and apply a few drops of water. Mix the water into the oatmeal and you should see the water turn milky.

4. Apply the oatmeal paste and the milky water on your skin and gently use it to cleanse. Once you have massaged it into your skin long enough you can rinse it off.

I have only been using this for about two weeks and so far so good! I use this cleanser on its own it the morning and after my Image Ormedic Balancing Cleanser at night. This seems to be perfect for my acne-prone dry skin, especially now that it is winter!

Have you used this or any other DIY skin care?

  1. Gonna try it, I actually tried that one you mentioned with the honey and cinnamon, it works fine the down side it drips off too fast from my face.

  2. I'll have to try this! Whenever my skin is super dry or irritated I'll put a scoop of raw oatmeal in a washcloth and make it into a bundle using a hair elastic or rubber band. I then let it soak in a warm bath. The closed washcloth keeps it from being messy and the oatmeal moisturizes and soothes my skin.

  5. I was introduced to this a while back, and I keep going back to it because it's the only thing that doesn't cause my skin to flare up when it's super dry and irritated. It does get a little messy though! :P
