First Impression: Tarte Amazonian Clay Airbrush Foundation + Airbuki Bamboo Powder Foundation Brush

Greetings from the Dark Side!

I recently purchased the Tarte Amazonian Clay Airbrush Foundation and the Airbuki brush that is meant for the foundation. I haven't purchased much from Sephora lately, but I received a Sephora and Ulta gift card from my lovely supervisor as a early graduation gift and as a goodbye from my work-study job and I decided to splurge a bit (I will post a haul shortly)! This foundation has been on my wishlist for a long time now, and I really wanted to give it a try. I have only used it twice and I want to post this First Impression post now to before I begin my 1-month test trial. Keep reading for more information~

Foundation:
Here is the description of the foundation from the Tarte website: "Amazonian clay full coverage airbrush foundation delivers flawless, natural-looking coverage that lasts, while the skintuitive™ formula invigorates skin tone and texture for a youthful complexion. Powered by Amazonian clay enriched with the Earth’s natural, light-reflecting gemstones, this moisture-rich powder buffs on smoothly for waterproof, 12-hour coverage that won’t settle into fine lines and wrinkles. Available in 11 shades to perfectly complement a wide range of skin tones and undertones, this innovative foundation also employs a custom mesh delivery system for a fool-proof, mess-free application every time." I first purchased the shade 'fair-light honey' and that is the one I used in my Jasmine makeup look, but it ended up being too orange for me so I changed it for the shade 'fair-light neutral'. The foundation is $36.

Brush:
The Airbuki brush is a fairly small, short-bristled, and dense brush. It is meant specifically for buffing in the Airbrush foundation. This brush is $26.

I used this foundation in my Jasmine-inspired makeup look. I used the shade 'fair-light honey' but the undertone was too orange. In the photo is looks like a perfect match for me, but my lighting washes me out in photos so the photo here is not an accurate representation of how it looks in person.

The first thing I want to mention is the price of the foundation and the brush. I'm not going to lie, it is a hefty price for both products. In total, it's $62 for both the foundation and the brush. But, there are plenty of foundations out there that are more expensive than that, so I think it is a fair price. Plus, you can use the brush with other foundations too, not just with this one.

The description of the foundation says it comes in 11 shades that will  "perfectly complement a wide range of skin tones and undertones", but I really disagree with this statement. I had a lot of trouble choosing the best shade for me. I matched myself first and choose the shade 'fair-light neutral' (which is the correct match for me), but three different SAs matched me in two other different colors. I don't think that the SAs are bad at their jobs, but it is just really difficult to get a perfect match from the limited selection of colors. I know a lot of other bloggers/reviewers had trouble finding a good color match for themselves too, so just be warned. I had to go through the slight inconvenience of switching out my foundation shades, and I think a lot of other people might have the same problem. I find that the foundations run a little dark so definitely try it out in store first if you can.

The packaging is simply phenomenal. The jar is beautiful and super convenient. The "sifter" is actually a mesh-like material that stops the foundation from spilling out. The jar lid covers the hole and the mesh area when the jar is closed; you will never have to deal with the problem of spilling tons of powder whenever you open the jar. The brush is amazing with this foundation because it fits perfectly in the meshed area, and picking up powder with the brush is easy and mess-free.

Even though the first shade I got was too orange, I decided to try it out anyway just to see how I liked the formula. I was very skeptical about this being a "full coverage" foundation, especially since it is such a lightweight powder. The airbuki brush perfectly buffs this powder into the skin and leaves a really natural finish. I slowly buffed the powder all over my face, adding a little extra to any spots that needed it more.

I am surprised to say that this does have an amazing coverage. It covered a lot of my redness and acne scarring (not all, but most). I will need to use a concealer next time in those areas that need more coverage though. Honestly, I am really impressed. I am very wary of powder foundations because 1) I have dry-combination skin, and 2) I have a lot of acne/acne scarring. This did not cling to dry areas, mattifyed my oily areas, and covered most of my imperfections while still looking really natural. I will have to test this out to see if it breaks me out or if it dries my skin out. But for the mean time, I am really happy I decided to give it a try!
